Welcome to Jean-Pierre Gras’ artist studio, famous Avignon painter and sculptor (1879-1964).
We hope that your stay in this unusual building, with its different architectural styles, will be a source of creative inspiration.
When you enter the Atelier up a short flight of steps, you will discover a large living room bathed in natural light from the XIXth century window.
There, with the sunlight filtering through the blinds, even in the summer you will delight in this winter garden and, for a breath of fresh air, you can slip out onto the balcony, shaded by the olive branches.
A second living-room with a moss covered wall and a large dining area faces a very intimate courtyard.
The house has 2 floors ; on the first floor, there are 2 double bedrooms and a single bedroom, each with either a shower or a bath and on the second floor, under the eaves, 3 single mattresses for children.
This property consists of a former artist's studio on 3 levels ('The Atelier d'artiste') and its independant studio('The Studio') on the ground floor courtyard. The 'Atelier' was built in the nineteenth century, by grafting on a house dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Its charm is mainly due to the mix of ages as well as a careful and faithful to its history decoration.
2. Strengths of Avignon and the surrounding region.
Avignon, historic town surrounded by ramparts and largest theater in the world in July, is rich in architecture, from medieval times to twentieth century. From the Palace of the Popes to the Calvet Museum, through the Lambert Foundation (Museum of contemporary art), you can discover its extraordinary heritage through its many squares lined with plane trees and its alleys.
Avignon is located in the heart of one of the most important tours of South France. Thanks to an efficient transport service (bus, train, rental cars), you will discover at least one hour ride, the more beautiful villages of the Luberon with its lavender fields and olive trees, the largest market of antiques and decoration from France at L'Isle-sur-Sorgue, important historic sites such as Orange and its roman theater, the castle of the Marquise de Sevigné in Grignan, Aix-en-Provence, Les Baux de Provence, Saint Remy de Provence, the Pont du Gard ... but also the creeks of Marseille and the charming ski slopes of Mont Ventoux, the great beaches of Grau du Roi, the wine tours from Suze-la-Rousse to Gigondas through the hillsides of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the truffle country in Richerenches, bullfights in Nîmes and Arles and many other discoveries yet ...
Duo of decorators, Amaury and Gilles, passionately fond of History and lifestyle, collectors of paintings, from 18th &19th century and works of art, now decorate their mansion in the heart of the largest private garden of Avignon, just beside the 'Atelier d'artiste'. They will guide you to the landmarks and good places of the papal city.
They pick you up at the station or the airport if you wish.

We chose Avignon for its location in the heart of Southern France, at 2:40 from Paris by TGV. Regarding the house, we were attracted by the different periods which are: half of the sixteenth century, partly renovated in the nineteenth century by a painter-sculptor to make an artist's studio. This home is located in the oldest neighborhood of Avignon, where the most beautiful mansions in the city are located.
This house, with its size and style, atypical in Avignon, and his calm, allows to feel immediately very well.
Convenient location close to the small squares surrounded by restaurants and shops, especially Les Halles, the daily covered market.

This flat is absolutely amazing, a true work of art filled with antique furnishings and everything one could need for a comfortable stay in Avignon. The pictures just do not do justice to this wonderful apartment.
We were a party of 5 including 2 small children and were very comfortable during our stay. The 4 bedrooms are all spacious and beautifully designed w/ AC and private bath for the 3 proper bedrooms. The 4th bedroom on the top floor is loft style where our children stayed comfortably. The kitchen is fully equipped with Nespresso machine. There are 2 separate sitting areas downstairs that are both very spacious and jaw droppingly beautiful with antique doors, paintings, and modern comfortable furnishings. The rooms are very well connected by spiral staircase that can take you from the loft all the way down to the kitchen. We even parked our car in the downstairs garage which made day trips out into Provence a breeze.
Amaury was a gracious host and extremely helpful at all phases of booking and during our stay. He gave us some great recommendations of places to eat, points of interest in Provence, and general orientation around Avignon (market, bakery, etc.) Avignon was the perfect destination for us to visit as it is right in the middle of many major sites in and around Provence. We highly recommend the tour to La Nerthe winery (~15 minutes by car) which Amaury suggested and needs to be booked in advance.
I have stayed in many flats using various "for rent" websites like Homeaway, and this is easily the best I have ever stayed in. This villa is not just a great place to stay while visiting Avignon but a destination unto itself. It's amazing that you can even rent a place like this. I cannot recommend highly enough!
If you are reading this review all I can say is stop looking and book now! We stayed over the new year and wish we never had to leave.
Amaury is the most amazing host! He will make sure your stay is special and wonderful. He went to the train station 3 separate times to get each one of our party. He went out of his way to get us to lunch on our first day before everything shut. He knows the area and will not steer you wrong. Ask him, his advice and suggestions are amazing. Jill his partner is wonderful. They are 2 of the warmest people you will ever meet.
The apartment is beautifully appointed and immaculate. We had great evenings sitting by the fire, drinking wine and enjoying each other. It is centrally located and easy to get around Avignon as well as for exploring Provence.
My husband and I have never repeated a visit to any vacation spot until now. We will be back and can't wait to stay with Amaury!
The property was decorated beautifully and was quite charming and unique. I couldn't have asked for anything more. But the best part about renting this apartment is the host by far. Amaury made you feel so welcome and was kind and generous with his time, advice and suggestions. On the day of our departure, he even woke up to meet us at 6am to drive us to our car which was so huge that we parked it outside the city walls. We will definitely return! It was a pleasure meeting you Amaury.
Our American family of four (two boys 9 and 6) stayed four nights at the Atelier d'artiste in Avignon. We were a bit nervous bringing the boys to Avignon, not certain there was enough to keep them busy. We were wrong.
Our fantastic Avignon adventure started when Amaury, the property owner, met us at the apartment entrance. Amaury is a wonderful man, spending 25+ minutes showing us the apartment (how to use the A/C, washer/dryer, etc) and providing an oral history of the artist and building he used as his residence and studio. When the home tour was completed, Amaury spent another 30+ minutes making recommendations for dining and entertainment. He took our kids likes/dislikes into account. We visited three of his recommended dining spots... and wow were they great. Much better than picking from tripadvisor. Amaury really got our Avignon trip off to a great start.
The apartment itself is beautifully decorated and truly amazing for a 16th century building. It retains much of its historic character while simultaneously offering modern amenities (a/c, wifi, great kitchen, etc). The kids room in the attic is also well thought out... our kids especially enjoyed the spiral stair case that leads up to that room. It was nice having a garage for the car since I can't imagine trying to find a parking spot within the walls of the city. The washer/dryer was also a plus. While the pictures on the property page are representative of the place, the apartment in person is much more charming and beautiful.
We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. In fact, I wouldn't even look at other properties in Avignon before booking here again. Amaury added so much to our trip that separating the apartment from his hospitality is hard to do.
My husband and I stayed here with our three daughters. We've been traveling around France for 3 weeks and this was our favorite place both in terms of the house itself but also the location in Avignon. There was plenty of space in the house and the kids loved all the little nooks. Amuary is an exceptional host. He was warm and helpful from the moment we met him and even suggested some restaurants and things to do (we loved the light show at the Pope's Palace). If I could give this place 10 stars I would. I want to go back!!
Believe the reviews! This accommodation is unlike any other, with fastidious and artful attention to details. We stayed here with three adults and two teenagers and there was plenty of living space for all. Amaury was a most gracious and helpful host. A few suggestions: enjoy Avignon, rather than use it as a jumping off point for the rest of Provence so that you can enjoy the town and these incredible digs (you will not want to leave). Bring the smallest car that can possibly accommodate your luggage if you are driving, for the streets are ancient, tiny, and Byzantine. Embrace Amaury's suggestions. We made the mistake of spending the better part of a day driving up the recreation of the Chauvet Cave and thought it was mostly a bust. This atelier is well worth the extra coin if you appreciate sumptuous and transformative living -- which is the whole point of going to the likes of Avignon in the first place. Recommended unreservedly for those with full mobility.
