A simply magical place!
If you are looking for modern luxury, Merrylaw is not for you! If you want to escape from the world however, you couldn’t find anything better. (I noticed other reviews saying it could be cleaner - it could- but everything that needed to be clean, was clean). The cottage is in a magical location way off the main road with nothing to keep you company but sheep, birds, deer and a resident rabbit who pops by to let you view him at the same time every morning and evening.
There was a lovely fire burning in the wood stove to greet us when we arrived and a plentiful supply of logs to see you through the week as long as you are happy to chop your own.
Ian was incredibly welcoming and so helpful (he really went out of his way to do a special favour for us).
This place smells of old stone cottage and wood smoke, the decor is from various generations, there is a collection of bric a brac (and clutter), but would l have liked it better if it had a fancy kitchen and WiFi and Sky tv? I can tell you, l would not. It has a charm all of its own.
You do not come away feeling like you got away from it all - you HAVE got away from it all and you do not want to leave.
There are very few places like this left to stay in and the photos do not do justice to the absolutely wonderful location of this property. If you appreciate nature and life more than you do things, then you could not fail to fall in love with this place.
Great Bolthole in Scottish Borders
Great cottage in the about 20 mins from Hawick surrounded by woodland and open moorland. Great for owners of nervous dogs or if you just want to get away form the city.
Great not to have a TV but with the views and walks on hand who needs them.
No wifi but you can get intermittent reception indoors and ok reception outside on 3g with O2. Great reception from the owner including a bottle of wine hopefully will visit again soon.
Great guests who obviously appreciated what we have to offer😊.
Welcome back anytime.
Great Relaxing Break
Had a brilliant relaxing time at Crofters Cottage. Whole family loved the tranquil surroundings, fantastic weather, already planning our next visit!
So pleased we met your expectations😁. Merrylaw cottage is a special place and it is important to us that we can give families quality time together in the most amazing location.
We look forwards to welcoming you back.
With beautiful views and no neighbours within a mile this is a great peaceful getaway from modern life.
No TV reception and barely any internet on your mobile devices so nothing interrupts the peace, except having to chop logs for the fire.
It's a crofters cottage so don't expect modern furniture and fittings but what is there is adequate.
Not suitable for people with reduced mobility due to steep stairs and hills, but if your fit, love the outdoors and seclusion then this cottage is perfect.
Quaint and quiet cottage.
We had a great time at this little cottage. It’s out in the middle of the Scottish landscape, not really close to anything, which is what we wanted. Easy and quick drive to Hawick for anything that we needed. The cottage was comfortable and cozy, no WiFi/cable etc. but lots of movies, books, magizines, and games. We really enjoyed our stay and we’re looking forward to visiting again.
Old run down dirty cottage
The only reason it has getting 1 star is for the location it was set upon as this was amazing!
Upon arrival I had to hoover the carpets and wash the dishes as they were all dirty. The carpets weren't fitted and were up the skirting board or didn't quite reach them, the living room looked like some sort of patch work quilt with 2 different carpets and a dirty rug. When I sat on one of the sofa's it was like a concrete block lifting the cushion up it was all chewed likely from rodents such as mice and rats underneath and the other sofa you sunk into. The lino (flooring) in the hall way had a hole in which was covered by yet another tatty rug and the lino in the kitchen did not go all the way to the benches. The stair carpet did not go all the way up and the bedroom with 3 very old needing replaced beds in had a cut off piece of carpet which I assume was left from downstairs as it looked like the same colour. The bed within the master room was again rock solid think the mattress had been there as long as the building (including the other furniture) and there was also stains on the bed sheets. There were cobwebs in every corner most of them contained the spiders choice of lunch (flies) and there was dust webs hanging from the ceilings. The bathroom light didn't work it went on for a few minutes then turned itself off. There was a rat trap box in the bedroom hidden under the drawers and another one within the living room round the back of the sideboard. The pantry in which you are advised to store food in also had a mouse trap inside. I did try to make the best of a bad situation I looked for some cleaning products however the duster was actually disintegrated onto the wall which shows that's never been moved for a very long time. We had to cut the stay short as my son developed a nasty cough which I am not surprised about given the damp within the bedroom and bathroom. To be honest I was pleased to get away from the place so I could actually come home and get cleaned. Feel like I have just been conned out of my hard earned money as this place is in no fit state to be classed as a holiday get away. There was a smoke alarm within the living room where there is a log burning fire however did not appear to be in working order with no cover on it see photo attached, the plug in the bath had to be removed with a knife as there was nothing else to get it out with. There is a huge difference in a place being back to basics in which we have experienced quite a few times (as this is what kind of holidays we prefer) compared to just being an old run down
These were the guests from hell!
They brought 3 dogs without asking. They left 30 piles of dog poop on the lawn in front of the cottage. There was dog excrement on all the bed covers. There was a pile of dog poop left on the windowsill inside the lounge. They'd ripped the letterbox off. The frame of the sofa bed was broken. There were 4 dog pee stains on the lounge carpet. The lino in the hallway had been torn. They had broken the eyepiece off the telescope that guests can use. A new hand axe disappeared from the woodshed. Our housekeeper reported that their son had a streaming cold and cough on arrival, but they tried to blame it on the cottage.
They claim they had to leave because the cottage was so filthy. I'm not surprised, but it was their own disgusting filth.
We have had over 100 families stay with us, and several since these guests. None of them have had any issues with our cottage, so please disregard their comments. They are definitely not welcome back, nor either should they be allowed to stay in any other HOMEAWAY properties.
