We stayed in the Starfish Cottage for 3 nights and had the best time. Ida picked us up from the airport and took us to her home where we picked up the golf cart, which we used to tour the island during the duration of our stay. A short 5 minute drive through town to the cottages, where Ida pointed out the few restaurants and small grocery in Black Point. Our cottage was stocked with food, as Ida graciously offered to pick up groceries for us (I had emailed her a list about a week before our arrival). Note- We froze some meat while we were in Nassau and checked it in our luggage. Also purchased beer/booze in Nassau, which were checked as luggage. Limited selection of food/booze available to purchase on the island, so come prepared. We did purchase some booze on the island from Zhivago at one of the restaurants/bars. The kitchen in the cottage was stocked with all essential appliances, pots, silverware, and cooking utensils. Propane grill was available for use; however, it was hard to light at night when it was windy.
The views from both entrances of the cottage were stunning; a 30 second walk down to the bay, 2 minute walk down to the Atlantic side. Ida had some great beach umbrellas, lounge chairs, mini volleyball net, and covered seating area down at the beach. We were typically the only people on the beach, with some sailors coming into explore the bay at low tide. We were very active on the island; we recommend a good pair of shoes (we had Keen waterproof hiking sandals) secondary to all the rough coral around the various parts of the island.
Ida couldn’t have been a better host. She was very easy to communicate with by telephone and email prior to our stay and answered plenty of questions for us. She stopped by a few times to check on us, on one visit she brought us a delicious turkey dinner and had made a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for Dan’s birthday on Sunday! Ida arranged for a tour guide for us to go explore the Exumas by sea and Raynar was a fantastic guide. We were frequently the only people at the various cays and beaches. Bring lots of camera batteries, we ran out about half-way through our sea outing.
Ida’s cottages were bright and beautiful; however, we did not spend much time inside. There was Wi-Fi available with Satellite television. A few of Ida’s cottages had DVD players with some DVD's available.
Our only regret, not staying longer! Thank you Ida and the local residents for making us feel so welcome! We'll be back!!
My husband and I stayed at Ida's "sea shell" cottage for 6 nights and had the absolute best time. Everything about our stay was perfect - the cottage, the views, the beaches, the people of Black Point, our trips to surrounding cays…the list goes on. Ida is so wonderful to deal with and made sure all of our needs were taken care of, starting with picking us up at the airport and showing us around the cottage when we arrived. Anything we needed, she was right there. Her and her husband’s hospitality made us feel very welcome and taken care of. The cottage had everything we needed for the week – kitchen supplies, air conditioning, wifi (although not the best connection), bedding, beach towels, and a golf cart to get around the island. It was immaculately clean when we arrived. But the best thing about the cottage by far is its location overlooking the beautiful Black Point bay with beach access (including lounge chairs) and perfect views of sunsets over the bay.
Things to do: happy hour at Scorpios (food/drink deals and lots of cruisers go) and lunch/dinner at Deshamon’s and Lorraine’s. The service and food (especially at Lorraine’s and Deshamon’s) was wonderful and reasonably priced (e.g. grilled grouper with peas and rice, veggies and salad for $22USD). We also bought loaves of coconut bread from both restaurants which is homemade and delicious. For groceries, there is a store called Adderly’s which had a lot of staple items and wasn’t too expensive.
Renting a boat from Ida was the highlight of the trip for us. The first time you rent, you go out with a guide and he took us to the beaches where you feed the pigs and iguanas (a must-see!), showed us all the good snorkeling spots and pointed out the best cays and spots to visit. I cannot even describe how beautiful the water and cays are – the colours of the water are surreal and you have your choice of deserted beaches to pull up to and enjoy on your own. If you rent a boat, I also recommend spending some time in Staniel Cay and eating at the yacht club there. The food was great and it’s a beautifully-decorated spot right on the water.
Black Point also has its own beautiful beaches that you can get to using the golf cart. One of them (on the south end of the island) was one of the prettiest beaches we've ever seen. It was so hard coming home after a wonderful week on Black Point. I really hope to be back again next winter! Thank you Ida and Terrance for such a memorable week!
Our family (all 13 of us) came for 2 weeks over the Christmas holidays. We rented all 4 cottages. Everyone was very happy with their accommodations. Very clean, nicely decorated and well equipped. Ida and Terrence made our vacation a real pleasure. She couldn't do enough for us. Terrence arranged for a day of fishing which was very successful. Ida arranged a fun day of swimming pigs, feeding the iguanas and swimming with sharks. The kids had a great time on the Caribbean side. It is shallow and the beach is very nice. Both the Atlantic and the bank side are just steps away. The views are so beautiful. Everyone on the island is very friendly. Be sure to get coconut bread from Lorraine's mom. Yum! There is a grocery store and Ida has a convenience store at her laundromat. Three restaurants provide a ready excuse not to cook. Beer etc can be purchased at Scorpios Bar for takeaway. It was very hard to leave your little bit of paradise. Thank you Ida for helping to make our Christmas vacation one we'll never forget.
We stayed for 3 nights in one of Ida’s 2 BR cottages end of October –everything we hoped for - very nice, clean, nicely decorated, had all we needed in the cottage and kitchen. Even had TV’s/DVD/Movies which we didn’t need while we were there!
- A 2 minute walk to the ocean side – nice beaches to explore; 30 second walk down some steps to the bank side, nice cove shallows out at low tide, kids did a lot of exploring
- View of water from all sides of cottage from windows and wrap-around porch, outdoor table/seating, Breeze blew threw
- Immaculate – Ida takes great pride to be sure everything is perfect, our cottage looked like it had all brand new furniture and appliances, bedding
- Kitchen – fully stocked w/ nice cooking utensils/appliances/plates, Rachel Ray pots and pans!, sharp knives that were tested with about 6 rounds of conch salad in 3 days
- Hot Water, A/C, Internet, Ceiling Fans
- Golf Cart included with the cottage seated all 4 of us
- Ida provided true hospitality – picked up from airstrip, checking on us to be sure all was well during our stay, advice on the island, stocked with some groceries and drinks we provided list ahead of time, let us check-out late our last day since nobody else was coming into our cottage that day
- Some nice touches: Supply of nice beach towels, some basic kitchen necessities – salt, pepper, oil, soaps, etc., about 25 DVD’s, golf cart, nice gazebo down on the beach
- Things we did on the island – Blow hole, 4 or 5 beaches, explored island via golf cart, rented boat/guide, driftwood garden, local restaurants and bar, fresh made coconut and cinnamon breads from 2 of the local mom’s, visited school, fishing, shelling, conching, snorkeling,
We took a look at Ida’s other 3 cottages and they all looked nice with similar amenities and perfect view.
I've been here twice already (once in a group of 9 we booked 3 cottages and once 3 of us slept in one of the 2 bedroom cottages). I'm going again in February with my family. Ida is amazing and her cottages are beautiful. They are overlooking the most amazing beach and bay which has to be seen to be believed. Inside they are done up so nicely and have everything you need. The golf carts that come with the cottages are so handy, Ida picks you up from the airport in her big car, and arranges for you to rent a boat (they have different sizes) for the day. It's close enough to see the swimming pigs, iguana beach, the sharks at compass cay, thunderball grotto and Staniel cay yacht club. I've recommended for so many people to go here, it is a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. The cottages are right above the beach so you can pop up and down all day. She has sunloungers on the beach and a new gazebo for some shade. I can't recommend this place or Ida herself more. I can't wait to go back again!
My husband and I had a wonderful time on Black Point. Ida met us at the airport and took us to our cottage where she had homemade food waiting for us! One day she made pizza for her family and gave us some of that too!! The one bedroom cottage was perfect for us. The views are amazing and the sunsets magnificent!! If you are thinking of a secluded getaway for two, I highly recommend Ida's Beautiful Beachfront Cottage. You won't be disappointed!
